Originally founded by Geoff and Janice Heers in 1973.

In the 1980s Sky surfboards were being sold to shops along the East Coast, Sydney and internationally to Japan. The operation had expanded in to two locations, with the factory production shed on Banksia Street in the Arts and Industry Estate, and the showroom sales shop on Shirley Street as you enter Byron Bay.

During the 80s this location was known for its monstrous half pipe in the front yard, with skateboards often flying off into the local traffic- locals who knew this would approach with caution!

We also can’t forget that over the years Sky Surfboards has had consistent talent in all the Team riders. Back in the early years the first two riders were Mick (Cosmic) Birch and Gary Timperley, then into the 80s we saw the talent of local riders such as Danny Wills, Noel Graham, Peter Phelps and Pauline Menczer. 

I guess these days you could call one of our boards ‘vintage’ ‘retro’ or ‘old school’ but we are very proud to be able to say that since the beginning Sky Surfboards and our new merchandise (printed at PMD screen printers Byron Bay) is 100% designed and manufactured in the beautiful beach town where it first came to life………Byron Bay!
